Michael Jordan said it himself...
One major lesson I have learned in business: people will come to you thinking they know what they want, but after you talk to them more about their needs, you end up doing something totally different than what they came to you asking for. They don't know what they don't know. That's where you come in. This is the million dollar skillset.
Navigating this difference is one of my superpowers.
In my former business, Portland Garment Factory, (a full service design and manufacturing company) Nike came to us and wanted uniforms for MICHAEL JORDAN’s private jet flight attendants. Talk about a dream project! The Nike team had designed the entire thing, and we were to execute on their vision. But, when we learned about the flight crew, what they were doing every day on the job, and who these ladies were, we took one look at the vision for the uniforms and knew they had to go back to the drawing board. Curvy women in their late 40s do NOT want to wear short white tennis skirts, and stretchy tank tops. They were working with the most famous man on the planet. And their look had to reflect that.
When we (gently) pointed out all the flaws with the plan that they had, we became the experts. We pitched an entirely new collection, designed by us, with fabrics chosen by us, prints and patterns made by us. The fabrics were even dyed to match MJ’s plane. WE became the the visionaries. They had a need, and we knew exactly HOW to get them what they needed.
And BOY - I cannot tell you how good it felt to get those garments on the actual ladies in front of Michael Jordan himself and hear his words, “YOU GIRLS GET ME.”
Mic drop.
These words will ring in my head for the rest of my life. Starstruck. 28 year old standing in front of a fucking legend. And what is SO COOL about this whole thing, is that it WAS true! WE DID GET HIM! And we stuck to our gut of knowing what they came to us for was NOT the thing they needed. And we spoke up, stood in our expertise, and owned it.
